Diamond Dollars Case Competition

Everyone wants the opportunity to showcase their talents to the right people. That's exactly what the Annual Case Competition is all about. Graduate students from B-Schools, Sports Management programs, and other graduate and undergraduate programs across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a real baseball operations decision--the type of decision a team's GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season.

Graduate students from B-Schools, Sports Management programs, and other graduate and undergraduate programs across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a real baseball operations decision--the type of decision a team's GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. Five-person teams of students are asked to evaluate proposed player transactions, apply statistical analysis of player performance and assess the financial impact of the team's proposed moves. The case will be authored and led by Vince Gennaro, a consultant to MLB teams--someone who's been in the front office helping teams analyze key baseball operations decisions. Vince is the author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball and the President of SABR--The Society for American Baseball Research, and a regular contributor to MLB Network's new show, Clubhouse Confidential--the first show of its kind focused on baseball analytics. He is also a frequent guest on MLB Network's studio show MLB Now.
Once the student team has prepared its case, they will have the opportunity to present their analysis and recommendations to a group judges, which will include MLB front office execs. They will have a dialog, receive feedback and ultimately be evaluated, by this panel of judges, based on the quality of their insights and analysis. The Case Competition is a perfect fit for the avid fantasy player who believes they can match strategy with baseball execs, or for anyone who aspires to work in a Major League front office. It's a unique opportunity to demonstrate their talents and to network with current execs and other baseball industry insiders. Never before has there been a case competition solely focused on classic baseball operations issues--a perfect platform for any savvy analyst and student of the game, to differentiate themselves from the thousands who aspire to become baseball execs.
The winner of the 1st Annual Diamond Dollars Case Competition was the University of Chicago--Booth school, with the undergraduate division honors going to Yale University. Case participants had the opportunity to present their case to judging panel comprised of MLB team executives. Fourteen student teams entered the inaugural Competition. Eighteen MLB teams attended the Case Competition and SABR Analytics Conference, along with numerous media executives, industry suppliers, providing ample opportunity for networking with industry insiders. In its second year in 2013, the competition was won by Pepperdine Univiersity (grad and professional division) and the NYU-Tisch school (undergrad) divsion. At the 3rd Annual Case Competition, the winners were Duke Fuqua School of Business (graduate and professional division) and Loras College and Cornell University (undergraduate division.) At the 4th Annual Case Competition, the winners were Stanford University (undergraduate divison) and Arizona State University (graduate and professional division.) The event continues to grow in popularity each year, as more student teams enter and even greater interest is shown by MLB teams. As we approach the 7th year of the competition, over 60 participants participants from past Diamond Dollars Case Competitions have been able to secure internships or full-time positions within MLB and its teams.
The 8th Annual Case Competition will be held in conjunction with SABR's Baseball Analytics Conference--3 days of expert panels, guest speakers, research presentations, and networking events. Registration to participate in the Case Competition, will include admission to SABR's Analytics Conference, which will be sponsored by Major League Baseball and include participation by key personnel from MLB teams and analysts and writers from leading baseball analytic websites.
